Here’s a letter that I sent today to the Daily Cal:
Decrying privatization and “Monopoly money,” Ricardo Gomez requests your support in handing over more and more responsibility to the government (“The Ongoing Battle for Education Needs Student Support,” Jan 26th).
Quick, what is the largest source of monopoly power in California? The correct answer is the State. We don’t have to fear reducing the size and scope of this gun-toting monopoly. What people want, people will find efficient ways to provide. We can do things much better if left to our own devices: it costs the government twice as much to do anything as anyone else.
A rich bio-diversity is essential to an ecological system. The same thing applies to the economic order of social cooperation. The evidence overwhelmingly suggests that government intervention hampers competition and choice. Is it really a good idea for one business, the State, to run massive, complicated, and expensive programs? There are better, unrealized alternatives that our current government destroys.
