[...] I’m the child of Latino and Asian immigrants who worked as janitors so I could be the first in my family to attend college. I went on to teach college courses to new citizens. I know the true spirit of California opportunity and optimism is nurtured in great schools, not failed prisons. Awesome. Then you should support school choice. [...]

State employees have a natural interest and bias towards educating people to perpetuate and strengthen the state, and that upsets me.

You don't need government-run education to have citizens that can support a functioning democracy. Before there were compulsory education laws in Britain and the United States, education was near universal and financed much more locally.

P.S. I haven't read his blog, I'll check it out.

P.P.S I'll comment on your post on your blog.

Maybe true from individuals' POV, but our state, as a democracy, has a defined interested in creating millions of people who can best perpetuate said democracy -- i.e., educational indoctrination.

P.S. Do you read Al Roth's market design blog? He does some stuff on school choice; especially SF, since they're moving forward with a new school choice system now

Thanks for that link Paul! I think your analysis is spot on. In fact, because I agree with your post on biases so much, I think that reading it released some endorphins and reinforced some of my biases.

Oh well, you can't say we didn't try!

I didn't approve of people's behavior last night. It was going to be a dance party-- I was going to go but I couldn't make it--I'm am sorry that the Berkeley Police Department has to take care of this shit. Hopefully next time this won't happen; I love dancing.

[...] Crowds can’t have feelings. Ayn Rand astutely noted that there are no collective minds. I get the intentions here. The author is trying to frame this as a David v. Goliath, 101 Dalmatians v Cruella de Vil, Rudy v. Notre Dame, etc., triumph of the crowd. It ain’t doing much for my heartstrings, but maybe I’m just biased. [...]
